What Is PPC Keyword Research?

What Is PPC keyword research? PPC Keyword Research is the process of selecting the most relevant and valuable keywords to target in paid advertising campaigns, whether on Google Adwords, Bing Ads or Facebook Ads.

PPC keyword research can help you achieve higher rankings for your ad copy, make a more compelling case for your product or service in online marketing copy, find additional related products and services to advertise on search engines, get more website traffic and generate qualified leads.

Why Is PPC Keyword Research Important?

PPC keyword research is vital because it helps you find the right keywords to target in your campaigns.  If you choose the wrong keywords, you could waste a tremendous amount of money on clicks that don’t convert.

Worse yet, you could end up with a high bounce rate if people click on your ad but then leave immediately because they realize they’ve landed on the wrong website.

Getting Started

If you’re new to PPC keyword research, don’t worry – it’s not as complicated as it sounds.  In this blog post, we’ll give you a crash course in everything you need to know about PPC keyword research, from the basics of what it is to more advanced tips and tricks.

So, what is PPC keyword research?  Simply put, it’s the process of finding the right keywords to target for your PPC campaigns.  The goal is to find keywords that are relevant to your business, and that will generate a high-quality score, which in turn will lead to lower costs per click and higher ad positions.

There are a few different ways to go about PPC keyword research, but the most important thing is to start with a list of seed keywords.  These are general terms related to your business that you think potential customers might search for.  From there, you can use various tools (like Google AdWords Keyword Planner) to help you expand your list and find more specific keywords.

Once you have a good list of keywords, it’s time to start testing them in your campaigns.  Try different combinations of keywords and track your results to see which ones perform the best.  With a little trial and error, you should be able to find a winning combination of keywords that will help you achieve your PPC goals.

Keyword Research Tools

Several different keyword research tools are available to help you with your PPC campaigns.  Here are a few of the most popular:

  • Google AdWords Keyword Planner: This is a free tool provided by Google that allows you to research keywords and get estimates for how much they would cost to bid on in a PPC campaign.
  • Bing Ads Intelligence: This paid tool provides similar functionality to the Google AdWords Keyword Planner but for Bing PPC campaigns.
  • Wordstream Free Keyword Tool: This is a free tool that allows you to research keywords and get more detailed information about each one, including search volume, competition level, and suggested bid price.
  • KeywordSpy: This is a paid tool that provides detailed information about competitor PPC campaigns, including which keywords they are targeting and how much they are spending.

These are just a few of the many different keyword research tools available.  Choose the best fit for your needs and budget to start generating better results for your PPC campaigns.

Targeting Broad or Specific Audiences

There are a few factors to consider when doing your research:

  • Who is your target audience?
  • What are their needs and wants?
  • What do they search for when looking for products or services like yours?
What Is PPC Keyword Research?

Keyword research is essential to target the right audience

Once you’ve answered these questions, you can start researching specific keywords.  There are a couple of places you could start:

  • Look at your website’s search data to see what terms people are already searching for.
  • Check out your competitors’ websites and see what keywords they’re targeting.

When you have a list of potential keywords, you’ll need to determine which ones are most likely to convert into sales or leads.  To do this, you’ll want to look at things like search volume, competition level, and relevance to your product or service.

The Difference Between Broad and Phrase Match

Broad match is a keyword matching option that allows your ad to be shown whenever any word in your keyword phrase is searched for, in any order.

Phrase match is a keyword-matching option that allows your ad to be shown whenever your exact keyword phrase is searched for, in the same order – but there could be other words present in the search.

Exact match is a keyword matching option that allows your ad to be shown only when your exact keyword phrase is searched for, in the same order.

Finding Out How Much Traffic Your Competitor Has

As part of the process, you should take time to determine how much traffic your competitor has and how much they spend on their PPC campaigns.  This information can help you work out how much to bid on keywords in your PPC campaigns.

There are several ways to determine how much traffic your competitor has.  One way is to use a tool like Google AdWords Keyword Planner.  This tool will show you estimated traffic for specific keywords.

Once you have estimated your competitor’s traffic, you can start researching how much they spend on their PPC campaigns.  You could use a tool like SpyFu. SpyFu allows you to see the average monthly spend for a domain name.

When you have done all your research, you can start to formulate your own PPC campaign strategy.  For example, if your competitor spends a lot on PPC, you may consider bidding on similar keywords in your campaign to get some of that traffic.  Alternatively, you may decide to concentrate on another aspect of online marketing your competitors may neglect, like Social Media.

Conclusion

PPC keyword research is the process of finding the right keywords to target for your PPC campaigns.

Understanding how people search for products and services online can ensure that the right people are seeing your ads at the right time.

With the help of a good PPC keyword research tool, you can easily find profitable keywords to target and ensure that your PPC campaigns are as effective as possible.

If you have any doubts about running your PPC campaign, please talk to an expert before you start.  It can be very costly if you get it wrong.
