Mobile First Design: Why It’s Important (And Good) For Your Business

Mobile first design: Why it’s important (And Good) for your business. Mobile-first design is a good strategy for your business because it can lead to more conversions, better rankings in Google, and a better user experience.

Proper mobile-first design is the idea of starting with a mobile-optimised site rather than making the desktop site responsive. The benefits of this strategy include more conversions, better rankings in Google, and better user experience.

The Changing Landscape of Mobile

The average person spends over four hours daily on their mobile device, and that number only increases. With such a large portion of our time spent on mobile devices, it’s no wonder the mobile landscape is constantly changing.

One of the most significant changes in the last few years has been the introduction of responsive design. This means that websites are designed to adapt to the screen size of whatever device they’re being viewed on. This is important for businesses because it ensures that their website can be accessed and used by anyone, regardless of what type of device they’re using.

For many users, there is a permanent shift from desktop computing to mobile computing. As a result, more and more people are using their mobile devices as their primary way to access the internet and all of their online services. We anticipate that this trend will only continue, so businesses need to ensure that they’re well-prepared for a world where mobile is the primary way people access the internet.

Why Mobile First Design?

Traditionally, websites have been designed for desktop users first and then adapted for mobile devices. However, this approach is no longer adequate, given the growing popularity of mobile devices.

Mobile users have different needs and expectations than desktop users, so a separate mobile website is often required. For example, they are clicking and scrolling with their fingers rather than a mouse and often browsing on the move, so website elements need to be further apart and easily identifiable on a small screen device.

Here at Video & Web, we adopted “mobile-first” design as standard a few years ago. While many other designers have also changed how they design sites, others are still lagging behind and designing first for desktops with a responsive design for smaller screens.

There are several benefits to having a mobile-friendly website. First, it can help you reach a wider audience. Studies have shown that people are more likely to visit a website optimised for their device, and they’re also more likely to make a purchase on a mobile-optimised site.

In addition, a mobile-friendly website can help you improve your search engine ranking. Google has stated that they give preference to websites that are optimised for mobile devices when ranking search results.

Finally, having a website that looks great and functions well on all devices helps create a positive impression of your brand. In today’s competitive marketplace, it’s crucial to stand out from the crowd, and having a well-designed website is one way to do that.

There are many things to consider when designing ‘mobile-first’

How To Get Started with Mobile First Design

If you’re not sure where to start with designing or developing your website for mobile devices, there are a few things you can do

  1. Prioritise the most important content to your mobile users and present it in a way that is easy for them to consume.
  2. Keep your mobile design simple and uncluttered. Avoid using excessive amounts of text or complex graphics that will be difficult to view on a small screen.
  3. Make sure your site is easily navigable on a mobile device. Use large buttons and clear menus so users can find their way around without difficulty.
  4. Pay attention to load times. Ensure your site loads quickly on a 3G or 4G connection by optimising your images and code.
Test your site on multiple devices to ensure it looks and works as intended across different screen sizes and browsers.
  5. Use responsive design techniques so your site can adjust its layout and content to fit the users’ device. Remember, different mobile devices have different screen sizes and resolutions.
  6. Include a call to action that is relevant and easy to tap on a mobile screen.
  7. Make sure your contact information is prominently displayed and easily accessible so users can get in touch with you if they need to.
  8. Use mobile-specific analytics to track how users interact with your site and make changes accordingly.
  9. Keep your mobile site updated with fresh content regularly to keep users coming back for more.

Designing for the Future

As the world increasingly moves towards a mobile-first reality, it’s more important than ever for businesses to design their products and services with this in mind. Mobile-first design is all about creating an optimised experience for mobile devices, with the understanding that users are likely to access your content on their phone or tablet before any other platform.

Finally, keep in mind that mobile devices are constantly evolving and changing. By keeping your finger on the pulse of the latest trends in mobile technology, you can ensure that your content is always ahead of the curve and relevant to your audience.
