The Anatomy of a Perfect Blog Post

Video and Web
By Emma Peldon

The World Wide Web is a huge space, so it’s easy to get lost in the sea of online information. In this article, we explore the anatomy of the perfect blog post.

Creating a successful blog post involves more than just putting words on a page. It’s worth paying attention to key elements to make it easier for Google and other search engines to find, index and rank your content.

Adding regular blogs to your website serves several purposes. In addition to being great for Search Engine Optimisation (SEO), it establishes you as an expert in your field and keeps your company ahead of your competitors.

If the content is worth reading and relevant to your product or service, it can also serve as an enticing attraction that keeps people coming back to your website. Also, posting links to your blogs on social media is a great way to get more traffic to your website.

What Should You Write About?

Write about what you know. The content is the heart of your blog post. It should be informative, engaging, and relevant to your target audience.

From a Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) standpoint, you should try to naturally incorporate keywords throughout the post, including in the body text, headings, and image alt texts. Try to include the blog title within the first paragraph.

How Often Should You Post a Blog?

Your website isn’t just a static brochure; it should be a dynamic platform that evolves over time with fresh, engaging content. Regular updates keep your audience interested and signal to search engines that your site is active and valuable.

By continuously adding new, unique pages, whether through blog posts, product updates, or case studies, you expand your digital footprint, increasing your site’s authority and relevance in the eyes of search engines. The more quality content you have, the more keywords and topics you can rank for, improving your Search Engine Optimisation (SEO). It makes it easier for potential visitors to find you, as search engines prioritise websites that offer consistently updated, unique, and relevant information.

Ultimately, your evolving website becomes a powerful tool for driving organic traffic and building your online presence.

So, how often should you post? As often as possible (ideally several times a week!), but at least once a month.

Eye Catching Blog Title

Creating your blog title is quite an art, as it needs to be concise and different from all the other blog posts. Google rates short, snappy titles, so take some time to boil your title down to its essence.

Consider that your blog post title is the first thing that attracts potential readers both to your website and from search engines. An SEO-friendly title should include your primary keyword and give a good flavour to your blog. For instance, if your target keyword is “Gothic Revival Architecture,” a strong title could be “How Gothic Revival Shaped Victorian Architecture.

Content Images and Video

Google values images and video because it recognises that users are more likely to spend time on a page that includes rich media. Mixed content is also more shareable, so including high-quality, relevant images and (or) video will help get your post indexed.

A light sprinkling of relevant copywrite-free images, infographics, and videos also helps to make your post more interesting for the reader. We recommend a minimum of 2-3 images per 500 words.

It’s great if you use your own images to bring some originality and authenticity to your posts, but as a minimum, ensure that your images are copyright-free. Several free image resource sites, such as Pixabay  or Unsplash, are available. Many companies sell copyright-free images, such as Shutterstock, Pic Jumbo and istock, but they can be costly.

When choosing images, consider your brand identity. Creating a sense of unity and cohesion in visual elements such as colour schemes, tones, and styles helps to reinforce your brand’s personality and values, making it easier for readers to recognise and connect with your content.

Whether you favour clean, minimalist designs or vibrant, bold imagery, ensure that each image aligns with your brand’s message. So, whatever your company vibes, the key is to set some ground rules.

For Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) purposes, optimise each visual element. Use descriptive file names, add relevant alt text with keywords, and compress images for faster loading times.

Sub – Headings (H3)

Subheadings written in the larger H3 text format serve several uses within your blog. Firstly, they make your article reader-friendly by breaking the content into sections.

The added structure also helps search engines understand the information hierarchy in your post and improves the chances of appearing in featured snippets. For example, subheadings like “Eye Catching Blog Title” can help target more specific search queries.

Subheadings are also useful when readers are in a hurry and need to skip through content to find exactly what they want. We all like to think of our readers sitting down with a cup of coffee and digesting the great text we have lovingly created. However, that’s not always the case. People browse the web differently, on various devices and in diverse places. Consider a person reading your article whilst standing on a bumpy tube train and hanging on to a handrail. Then, imagine all the background chatter and how long the commuter has to read your article between tube stops.

Your article needs to be easy to read and understand in many different scenarios and situations.

The Featured Image

A picture speaks a thousand words! Your featured image should serve as a visual taster of your article and set the tone for your blog. A well-chosen featured image enhances the overall aesthetic of the blog and improves engagement by drawing attention in social media shares and search results.

Your featured image can repeat one of the text’s images or be something different.

Word Count

The minimum word count for a blog should be 500 words. However, ideally, it should range between 1,000 to 2,000 words. This length is effective for SEO because it allows for in-depth coverage of a topic, which search engines often interpret as more valuable and informative.

Additionally, a well-written, longer blog post can keep readers engaged longer, reduce bounce rates, and encourage sharing, all of which positively impact search engine rankings.

However, the focus should always be on quality over quantity, ensuring the content is comprehensive and relevant without any unnecessary rambling.

Links in Text

Linking is a powerful SEO tool. Internal links guide readers to other relevant content on your site, improving engagement and helping search engines crawl your website more effectively. External links to reputable sources can also boost your blog’s credibility and Search Engine Optimisation (SEO). Ensure that your links are relevant to the content and that the anchor text is descriptive and keyword-rich.

Useful Links Section

Why not add a couple of Further Reading links to the bottom of the page so that your visitors can keep browsing other articles within your website or access other useful links easily without having to search through text?

If you add hyperlinks to other websites, click the ‘open in a new window’ tab when setting up the link. This option will keep your website open in the browser, even if your reader clicks away from your website to browse your links.

Optimised Meta Description

The meta description is the summary of your blog post that appears in search engine results beneath the title. Though it doesn’t directly affect rankings, a well-crafted meta description can improve click-through rates. It should be around 150-160 characters, include the primary keyword, and entice users to click by highlighting the value of your content.

Conclusion

A successful blog post should blend high-quality content and strategic Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) practices. By focusing on elements like an SEO-friendly title, keyword optimisation, clear structure, and visual elements, you can create content that engages your readers and ranks well on search engines.

Remember, SEO is not just about keywords; it’s about enhancing the overall user experience, from fast load times to mobile responsiveness. By incorporating these elements and considering the recommended word count, your blog posts will be more discoverable, drive more traffic, and achieve the views and recognition they deserve.

Summary

In summary, the actions you need to take when creating your blogs are:

  •  Write informative, engaging and relevant content
  •  Post at least once a month, ideally several times a week
  •  Create an eye-catching, snappy blog title that reveals the essence of your blog content
