Eight Ways to Avoid Copyright Infringement

Video and Web

Here are eight ways to avoid copyright infringement. Copyright infringement continues to pose challenges for businesses and individuals alike. From photographs to videos, songs, and written works, content can be infringed upon in many ways.

With so many different media types available, it’s not always easy to determine whether your usage constitutes infringement. However, once you understand the risks involved with sharing other people’s work without permission or proper licensing, avoiding copyright infringement becomes much more straightforward. In addition, there are numerous strategies you can implement as a business or individual to keep your work safe and legitimate.

Read on for eight proven tips for avoiding copyright infringement and protecting your work from plagiarism.

Keep Up to Date on Copyright Laws

Copyright laws vary by country and even from state to state in the U.S. Furthermore, copyright laws continue to evolve, and the legal process for copyright enforcement and litigation changes accordingly.

For this reason, you should stay as up-to-date as possible on the latest copyright news and information and pertinent information related to your specific industry.

For example, many photographers are under the impression that they can’t be sued if they use another photographer’s copyrighted images under the “fair use” principle. While the concept of fair use is a valid defence against copyright infringement, it’s important to note that the law surrounding it is not written in stone and is often subjective.

Copyright laws are different around the world.

Be Careful When Using Content From Unknown Sources

If you’re unsure about the copyright status of an image or piece of written work, the safest route is to avoid using it entirely. If you are using another person’s content, ensure you’ve obtained their permission beforehand.

This includes things like quotes, images, and written work. If you don’t know the original source of a piece of copyrighted work, whether it’s an image or quote, it’s better to be safe than sorry. You can’t be sure if an image is truly in the public domain, and asking for permission is no guarantee that you’ll receive a “yes.” Remember, if you don’t know the original source of a photo or written work, you don’t actually know who owns it.

Watch Out for Infringing Websites and Services

Some online content-sharing websites and services are dangerous for copyright purposes. When reading through your social media feeds, you might find a link you want to repost.

However, before you click the “share” button, make sure that the content is something you’re allowed to broadcast. If you’re not sure, it’s best to avoid clicking the “share” button altogether.

Many websites, including social media platforms, have service terms prohibiting copyright infringement. If you repost content from a website like this, you risk violating the terms of service and being removed from the website. Furthermore, the person who created the content you’re sharing may decide to take legal action against you.

Be Careful When Licensing Music for Videos

Don’t forget to obtain clearance for any music you use in your videos.

If you’re creating a video, you might think it’s okay to use copyrighted music without permission.

However, this is not the case. If your video is broadcasted or published online, you’re required by law to get permission from the music owner. If you fail to do so, you could face hefty fines that could potentially devastate your business.

To use music with a Creative Commons license, you must attribute the song to the owner. However, if you’re unsure if the music is appropriately licensed, it’s best to avoid it entirely.

Don’t Forget About Video Footage

Footage can be found in various places, including news sites and government entities.

However, as with written work and music, you must get permission before publishing it.

You can also try contacting the video’s publisher or republisher and asking if they’d like you to attribute the work.

Be Very Careful When Working With Images

Images can be one of the most common types of copyright infringement. It’s easy to spot a picture on the Internet and assume that it’s in the public domain. However, this is often not the case.

If you’re using an image for any reason, make sure that you know who owns it and are using it with permission. If you aren’t sure, it’s best to move on to something else.

When creating your own images, whether for a website or for a marketing campaign, make sure that you own the copyright to that work. This will protect you if someone passes off your work as their own. A copyright notice doesn’t have to be long or fancy. It can be as simple as “All images copyright WXYZ Company, 2022” to let people know they’re looking at your work.

Be Vigilant About Your Writing

Whether you’re blogging or writing articles for publication, make sure you cite your sources and attribute the work you’re using. Failure to do so can result in copyright infringement and legal action.

Conclusion

The digital landscape is a fluid and ever-changing environment. As a result, our methods for creating and consuming content are transformed and adapted as new technologies are created.

With this constant evolution, it’s not surprising that copyright infringement and plagiarism are on the rise. While copyright laws have existed for decades, the modern way of life and the ever-expanding reach of the Internet has created a new and unique set of challenges in the protection of creative works.

However, if you’re a business or individual dedicated to creating honest and legitimate content, these challenges can be overcome with a bit of research and diligence. By keeping up to date on copyright laws, being careful when using content from unknown sources, and remaining vigilant about your own writing, you can protect your work from plagiarism and copyright infringement.
