Why?
We all leave our own carbon footprint, and the internet is a big player in terms of contributing to climate change. Data centres use an estimated 1 to 3 per cent of global energy, and we don’t want to be part of the problem.
We can’t fix the planet in one day, but we can certainly head for a more sustainable future. We’ve started by moving our hosting to web servers that work on 100 per cent renewable energy by harnessing the tremendous power of wind, sun and waves. Also, the green energy the servers don’t use gets fed back to the grid to reduce the amount of fossil fuel used elsewhere.
Award-Winning Servers
Energy is rated using the ratio of Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE). Anything over 2.5 PUE is considered inefficient. Most UK and US data centres run at an average of 1.6 PUE. So we can report that our data centres are super-efficient, running at an extremely low PUE of 1.12.
In addition, the cooling systems use low GWI (Global Warming Impact) refrigerants, and the modular uninterruptable powers supply saves over 100,0000 KG of CO2 per annum.
We are delighted that one of the UK data centres we use has won two environmental awards!
Power Efficiency Doesn’t Stop There
Our autoscaling platform is also doing an excellent job of using resources efficiently. The unique technology uses precious resources only where required. For example, if a website gets busy, we use resources from many servers to maintain performance. However, these resources will not be used unnecessarily when the website is less active.
The Future
