A website with substance, style and character
Character Communications needed a website that reflected the people behind the agency as much as their work. Lucy Kamall has a long history in public relations and marketing communications, with specialist experience in the timber, architecture and construction sectors. Kristien Wendt brings expertise in interactive technologies, videogames and immersive digital communication. Together, they needed a website that could present Character Communications as a thoughtful, experienced and distinctive consultancy with a clear personality.
The website needed to feel professional without becoming plain. It also needed to show that Character Communications had a strong understanding of traditional PR, modern marketing, social media, digital platforms, and technology-led communication.
A hero image leading with personality and storytelling.
Leading with personality and purpose
The homepage placed Lucy and Kristien at the centre of the website from the start. The hero photograph gave the site warmth and personality, while the relaxed setting helped convey the agency’s values.
The olive tree, leather sofa, lamps and carefully styled room all added character without feeling staged. These details mattered because the website needed to present a consultancy built around insight, reputation and personal relationships, not a generic communications service.
The homepage message, “Insightful Storytelling,” gave visitors a simple summary of the agency’s work. Public relations, social media, marketing communications, and consulting were clearly introduced below, helping visitors understand the business’s scope straight away.
A quotation that shaped the story
The name Character Communications created an opportunity to build the website around a meaningful idea.
We used the Abraham Lincoln quote:
“Character is like a tree and reputation like a shadow. The shadow is what we think of it; the tree is the real thing.”
The quote worked on several levels. It directly connected with reputation, public relations, and communications. It also gave a subtle nod to Lucy’s long-standing work in the timber industry. Rather than using a generic agency strapline, the website opened with an idea that felt thoughtful, relevant and rooted in the brand.
Showing the breadth of the consultancy without losing its overall coherence.
Balancing timber expertise with technology
Character Communications works across multiple specialist fields, so the website needed to avoid appearing too narrow. Lucy’s experience in timber, architecture and construction gave the site a strong sector focus. At the same time, Kristien’s background in interactive technologies and videogames needed proper visibility. The website therefore presented both areas clearly, showing the breadth of the consultancy without losing its overall coherence.
The clients page played an important role in this. It separated timber, architectural, and construction clients from interactive technology and video game clients, allowing visitors to quickly understand the two main strands of the business.
A distinctive visual style
The visual style gave Character Communications a memorable and individual feel. Textures, fabric-inspired backgrounds, and patterned sections created a layered, editorial quality across the site. The blue and burgundy colour palette gave the design warmth and depth, while the clean white areas helped keep the content readable.
Lucy and Kristien are a stylish couple, and the website needed to reflect that. The textures and wallpapers gave a subtle nod to their personality and taste, while the overall structure kept the site professional and easy to use.

Clear services and strong navigation
The homepage introduced the four key service areas: Consulting, Marketing Communications, Public Relations and Social Media. Each service had its own visual icon and short summary, giving visitors a quick route into the areas most relevant to them. The simple top navigation also made the site easy to follow, with clear links to About, Services, Clients, News and Contact.
Because Character Communications works in specialist sectors, the website needed to build trust quickly. Clear service sections, client examples, case studies and testimonials all helped demonstrate the agency’s credibility.
Showing experience through clients and case studies
The website made strong use of client logos, testimonials and case studies. Rather than making broad claims about experience, the site showed the organisations Character Communications had worked with. The client page provided visitors with immediate evidence of the agency’s reach across timber, construction, architecture, videogames, and interactive technology.
Case studies added further depth by showing the kind of work Character Communications had delivered. These sections helped make the site more than a profile page. It became a practical showcase of experience, results and sector knowledge.
The news section gave Character Communications a place to share client stories and industry updates.
A platform for news and insight
The website also needed to support regular news and updates. The news section gave Character Communications a place to share client stories, industry updates, project news and thought leadership. Blog cards were presented in a structured layout, with strong images, clear headlines and short excerpts to encourage visitors to keep reading.
For a communications consultancy, this mattered. The website had to demonstrate that Character Communications understands content, visibility and ongoing communication, not just explain those ideas in service copy.
Testimonials that reinforce credibility
Client testimonials added an important layer of trust to the website. The testimonials section showed direct feedback from people who had worked with Character Communications across technical and specialist industries. These comments reinforced Lucy and Kristien’s knowledge, contacts, professionalism and value.
For a consultancy built around reputation, testimonials helped turn experience into proof.
The result
The Character Communications website created a distinctive online presence for a specialist consultancy with real personality. The site brought together Lucy’s expertise in timber industry PR, Kristien’s experience in interactive technologies, and the agency’s shared values. The photography, Lincoln quotation, textured design, client showcase, news section and testimonials all helped create a website with depth, warmth and credibility.
Character Communications now had a website that reflected both sides of the business: strategic communications experience and forward-looking digital understanding. Most importantly, the website felt true to the people behind the brand.
